Thibault Blanchard

I am Thibault and joined Music in Action in 2022. I am working on the operational side of the charity as Events and Logistics Manager. I am delighted to be working with a young and vibrant team. I didn't know Jersey before and I would like to thank everyone on the island for their support and warm welcome! Music in Action has survived Covid and is now back stronger than ever before! Music in Action asked Thibault why music matters?

At what age did you start making music and how did you start?

My first contact with classical music happened when I was still in my mother’s belly. I was born in France into a musical family; both of my parents are professional saxophonists. My parents would take me to many concerts and operas. After one opera performance in which my mum was playing – ‘Werther’ by Massenet at the Lyon’s Opera House - I said to her: “I want to play the cello”. This is how I started playing the cello - and I've never stopped!

Where has your musical taken you to in the present day?

I have studied in France, then Belgium and in London with the amazing David Cohen. Learning from such an incredible cellist and artist was inspiring musically and humanely. I have learned a lot from him. He encouraged me to explore the music industry as a whole through performing, teaching, organising, managing. I have travelled to many European countries with different chamber groups and projects. I particularly remember a residency in Osaka, Japan during which I collaborated with a Buto dancer and a composer. As well as playing standard cello repertoire, I am working on mixing classical music and experimental-contemporary music through world premiered performances and composition.

Why does music matter to you?

Music and the arts in general are the heart of our civilization. We simply cannot imagine a society without any sort of art. Music is a powerful way to convey emotion. It can allow us to connect with kids, adults and the older generation.

I have established a charity in France which is organising an annual festival (https://baladesmusicalesaveyron.fr/) : the aim of this charity is to provide live music and support the young generation at the start of their career. My work with Music in Action is deeply connected with the core values of my existence and I am proud to be part of such an exciting and valuable organization.

What is your favourite place on earth?

That's a good one. Our planet is amazing and sadly human activity is destroying it. I don't have a specific favourite place but if I had to describe one: a nice countryside house at the end of the day on the terrace sharing a glass of french wine with my wife.

Who is your favourite composer?

I am keen on Russian music, especially Stravinsky, Shostakovitch, Prokofiev and all composers that lived in Russia  during the 20th century.

Prokofiev Sinfonia concertante Rostropovich 1957

Which historical figure would you choose to have dinner with?

I don't really live in the past. Dinner with my family and some friends would be the best!

What are you most looking forward to about Jersey Sings across the Bay?

Jersey Sings 2023 is coming up! I can't wait to listen to the School mass performance and the Bucket and Spades orchestra! All pupils have been busy learning the songs with their teachers and through a series of workshops organised by Music in Action.
