Jersey charity Music in Action has reinvented Jersey Sings 2020, with the creation of an online video choir, sponsored by Apex Group Ltd. Now in its fifth year, Jersey Sings! is one of the island’s most well-loved and exciting educational events with over 1000 children taking part in the grand finale. The cancellation of live events in 2020 due to Covid-19 meant that Music in Action had to get innovative with technology in order to produce a similar learning experience – albeit virtually – for schools and children all over Jersey.
Children from over 20 local schools and choirs took part in the project. Music in Action provided a series of four pre-recorded 30 minute video lessons with the aim of teaching children a fantastic medley of World War Two songs. The popular songs, from The White Cliffs of Dover to Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, and everything in between are particularly appropriate on this 75th anniversary of Jersey’s liberation.
The video lessons were recorded by expert tutors including internationally acclaimed soprano Joanna Forbes L’Estrange who has sung on over 200 Hollywood blockbusters from Star Wars to Kung Fu Panda, as well as Principal Conductor of the Jersey Chamber Orchestra, Eamonn Dougan, and Director Aureole Choir, Nicki Kennedy. Children were recorded singing the medley from home, and the files submitted to the Music in Action editing team. This project was an amazing opportunity to bring together local schools during a difficult time, and was a valuable learning journey for children through the month of June.
