Described by BBC Music Magazine as “an immaculately blended, responsive, interactive consort”, the Gentlemen of St John’s are famed for their “pure tone and controlled excellence” (Counterpoint Music). Formed of the Choral Scholars of the world-renowned, Gramophone award-winning Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge, they have enjoyed a remarkably busy schedule of concerts and recordings for over forty years.
The series in Jersey will include two concerts not to be missed. In both concerts on 20th in St Ouen and 21st at the Town Church, the choir will sing a first half of beautiful, and dramatic music including Byrd, Tallis and Lassus, spirituals and pieces written especially for the Gents. The second half will be exuberant and thrilling barbership and a capella music from Gershwin standards, the Jungle Book to Beach Boys hits. There is also a choral workshop when people can sign up to sing and learn from the Gents including music by Tallis and the spiritual Steal Away on the morning of Saturday 21st. Then they sing at a Musical Fun Run at 8.30am on Sunday 22nd before joining the service at Gouray Church over Gorey to sing the Byrd Mass in 3 parts, and other sacred music at 10.30am.
